Thursday: The Showdown

Jul 16, 2015 | Camp:

Hey Parents!

Our week is almost complete and it’s great to look back on the past few days and remember all the fun we’ve had, all we’ve learned through the life of Elijah and the new friendships we’ve made.

This morning we had the muddiest theme day yet! Chief Runny Nose led your campers in a battle against the buffalo of the Towers in the renowned Buffalo Hunt! In four rounds, kids defeated the buffalo by removing all four rubber bands off of each counselor’s arms and legs. Not to worry, your campers helped Princess Tigerlilly and Chief Runny Nose capture the prize buffalo and win!

Read: 1 Kings 18:20-46

In today’s Bible study, we jumped right into the action on top of Mount Carmel. Elijah is in the mix of a showdown with the false prophets of Baal and Asherah. After three years of severe famine in the land, Elijah stands face to face with prophets who claim their gods are more powerful than the one true God.

Elijah shouted to the false prophets,

How much longer will you waver, hobbling between two opinions? If the Lord is God, follow him! But if Baal is God, then follow him!

But the people were completely silent.

Elijah and the false prophets both built their own alters.

Then they called on the name of Baal from morning until noontime, shouting, “O Baal, answer us!” But there was no reply of any kind. Then they danced, hobbling around the altar they had made.

Elijah laughed at their vain attempts to call to a god who was merely stone.

Then, Elijah confidently prayed, “O Lord, God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, prove today that you are God in Israel and that I am your servant. Prove that I have done all this at your command. O Lord, answer me! Answer me so these people will know that you, O Lord, are God and that you have brought them back to yourself.”

Immediately the fire of the Lord flashed down from heaven and burned up the young bull, the wood, the stones, and the dust. It even licked up all the water in the trench! And when all the people saw it, they fell face down on the ground and cried out,

The Lord—he is God! Yes, the Lord is God!

Wow. What an incredible thing to watch the Lord’s power at work. He is the one true God. There is so much more to Elijah’s story and your kids have learned so much about him this week! We encourage you to ask them hard questions and be intentional about listening to all they learned!

Key Verse: Ephesians 2:10

For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.

Questions:

  1. Is there anything in your life that you are putting ahead of God right now?
  2. Do you believe that God is the one true God?
  3. If you do believe that God is the one true God, is he on the throne of your life or have you allowed an idol to replace him?
  4. Are you doing all you can to share the love of God with others?

Pray: Ask the Lord to lead your life and call you to Him daily. Thank Him for His grace, His love and for the reminders of those things that are in your life.
