Wednesdays are a special day here at the Timbers! It is a day set aside for both girls and guys to not only relax, have fun, and play games, but to ultimately learn individually about what it means to be men and women of the Lord.

To start off the day, our campers got to sleep in a little, followed by a porch side breakfast of kolaches, delicious blueberry muffin cake, fruit, and cereal. Afterwards, the girls met up at the Grand Mesa for some activities. They had a dance party, a tacky fashion show, and a lot of popcorn! In addition, each of our girl campers wrote on pieces of paper about who God is to them. The slips of paper were added to a chain that we’ve been building all summer long! To read the different ways in which the Lord reveals Himself to each camper is truly incredible. Girl Day ended in a discussion led by our very own Bedazzle about the significance of being a woman of the Lord. Similarly, our guy campers enjoyed strategic games that focused on teamwork and building each other up. They were challenged to be positive at all times, even amidst the trials. Two of our senior counselors, Penyo and Helms, also led their discussion about the importance of following God as a leader and how to set an example for others in humility and gentleness.

Junior high is a crucial point in the lives of many guys and girls, and it can be a vulnerable time for them as well. Thus, it can be so easy to believe what the media tells them. I know for us girls that we often look to magazines and TV advertisements for advice about our bodies and who we “should” be – how much we “should” weigh, what we “should” look like, and how many friends we “should” have. Many junior high boys struggle with these issues, too. However, our desire here at Pine Cove is to speak godly truth into all of our campers about being men and women of the Lord and to show them what that looks like. To be a man or woman of God involves complete surrender to ourselves.

Then Jesus told His disciples, ‘If anyone would come after Me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow Me.’
– Matthew 16:24

To be men and women of God is to live out the fruits of the spirit – love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Of course, we are going to fail. However, it is when we allow Jesus to pull us back to our feet and continue to follow Him by taking up our cross daily that we learn what it means to be His disciples. The Lord seeks our hearts, even though the world tends to tell us differently. He tells us to bear fruit; the world tells us to seek revenge. He tells us that we are to be confident in Him; the world tells us that we will never be good enough. How great is it that we are beautiful to Him just the way He made us! It is so special getting the opportunity to walk alongside our campers and encourage them in their walk with Christ.

Despite His promises, it definitely can be difficult to not fall captive to the lies of the world. Through the Holy Spirit, He shows His disciples how to trust in Him and live as godly men and women. Proverbs 3:26 describes Him perfectly:

For the LORD will be your confidence and will keep your foot from being caught.

He is the One whom we rely on, and He is where we find our confidence and identity. Jesus is our stronghold, our strength, and our joy. Being godly men and women is not an overnight transformation. Our reliance on Him for confidence, worth, and strength is what will continually transform us into men and women who follow Him.

Until next time,
