The relationship that a camper develops with their counselor here at Pine Cove is easily one of the most important aspects of their time at camp. That is why we here at Pine Cove are very intentional about getting to know our campers and nurturing a healthy, loving, and supportive relationship with each and every one of them.
The biggest way counselors do this is by having individual, one-on-one conversations with each of their campers, which we refer to as “Hang Times”. During these times, counselors talk to campers about all sorts of things; their time at camp, what they’re learning throughout the week, what they’re struggling with, or what their life looks like back home. These times are meant to be encouraging and helpful, giving campers specific advice pertaining to their lives, and showing them that Pine Cove staff is here because we love them and want to help them.
Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing.
1 Thessalonians 5:11
As for nurturing faith in our campers, it’s during Hang Times where much spiritual growth can occur. When a camper hears directly from their counselor that they are loved and accepted by God, it carries a truth that is much more permeable than when it it said from a stage. Hang Times offer counselors a chance to answer any questions a camper may have about faith, salvation, God, and anything in between. During a Hang Time, a camper may come to realizations about their heavenly Father that they never had before, and every week there are campers who come to accept Him as their Lord and Savior.
We’re working for the Lord here at the Shores, loving kids, encouraging them, and speaking Truth into their lives. How amazing that God chooses to use us for his glory!
But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ— by grace you have been saved.
