Cultivate: Seek Submission

Jul 8, 2015 | Camp:

What would you say defines you?

When someone asks you who you are, do you tell them what you do for a living or what you like to do in your free time? Do you describe your hopes for the future or maybe even your personality quirks?

Therefore, since Christ suffered in his body, arm yourselves also with the same attitude, because whoever suffers in the body is done with sin.
1 Peter 4:1

Tonight, after playing a game of real-life Battleship, Cultivate campers met on the dock for worship and a Club talk as the sun set. They went through 1 Peter 4:1-4 and talked about taking on the attitude of Christ. This can be scary to think about when we consider how much Christ endured on Earth and how He responded.

Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.
Luke 22:42

Even in the midst of His suffering, Jesus chose to stay submitted to the Father’s will. One needs only to look at 1 Peter 2 to see just how high a calling it is to follow Christ’s example. It means giving up our will for God’s will and sometimes losing what we consider to be “our lives,” what we do and who we consider ourselves to be.

When we submit our lives to Christ, however, we gain a new identity, one that is not tied to what we do in this life or what others perceive us as. Although, this submission means making a break with our sin and leaving some things we considered a defining part of us behind, we have life through the loss of ourselves to Him. Jesus did not need us to be perfect or His best friends in order to die for us, but Romans 5 tells us He died for us while we were still in our sin, enemies of God. Willing our lives away to be submitted to God’s will is worth any suffering we might endure.

Jesus showed us His love when He gave His life for us on the cross. We have the wonderful opportunity to choose to give our lives for Him as a response.

Please pray with us.

  1. Pray that campers would choose to submit their lives to the will of God.
  2. Pray that God would give them the strength to rise above the temptations of this world and break away from sin.
  3. Pray that the campers would be unified in love.
