What does it mean to be a true follower of Jesus? This is something we learned in today’s Bible study. It is in Luke 9 where we first see Jesus reveal himself as the Son of God to his disciples. He warns them to tell no one that he is the Messiah and then tells them about the rough final days he will endure. The disciples grow confused when hearing this. They have seen Jesus perform many miracles and now know he is the Son of God, so how can he die at the hand of man?
Then he said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will save it.
To live a life dedicated to following Jesus, ready to lay down our lives for Him, will grant eternal life in heaven. Jesus said that anyone who desires discipleship with him must realize they will never be good enough for the Lord and yet He still chooses to love them. Jesus does not desire half-hearted followers. He wants all or nothing. The disciples began to argue over who was the greatest follower of Jesus. True greatness can only be found in what the Lord says is great. Recognizing your sins and admitting that you need the Lord is the first step to building a relationship with the Lord. Why do you follow Jesus? Are you a follower or just a fan?
