This summer at the Timbers, campers are learning about several “I AM” statements Jesus uses to describe himself in the gospel of John. Yesterday they learned about how Jesus is the way, the truth and the life.
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.” John 14:6-7
Tell ’em about it—Philly’s words
“One time a friend told me to meet him at his high school gym in his hometown. I hadn’t ever been to this school before, so when I got there I tried multiple doors on any gym-shaped buildings to try and find the gym. Finally, once I was inside I found a gym, but it still was not even the right gym! Have you ever been lost? Maybe you were trying to get somewhere or find something but you had no clue how to get there or find it?”
A little bit of context
“In John Chapter 13, Jesus washes his disciples’ feet. After he does this amazing act of humility, he tells the disciples that one of them will betray him. Then, he hands out a new commandment: love one another. He concluded the chapter by telling Peter, “Truly, truly I say to you, the rooster will not crow till you have denied me three times.”
Passage for study
The bible study yesterday was designed to focus on the simplicity of the Gospel and the importance of Jesus. The Lord designed us to live in His presence (Genesis 1:27). When sin came into the picture, that relationship with our Creator was no longer possible and we deserved death. HOWEVER, God, in His grace, sent his Son to die for us that we might be reconciled back to Him and ultimately have eternal life (Romans 6:23). This gift is FREE (Ephesians 2:8-9). The only thing He asks of us is to believe and confess that Jesus is Lord of our lives (Romans 10:9-10). He is the ONLY way, truth, and life. Jesus is the only way to a personal relationship with the God of the universe and the only way to eternal life. Jesus is the only absolute Truth worthy to guide our lives. While so many things in our society now are gray areas, God never changes and His word stays true (2 Timothy 3:16). Lastly, Jesus is the only way to full and abundant life (John 10:10).
Our prayer as a staff is that your camper does not leave this place without hearing the power and beauty of what Jesus has done for each of us. He wipes us clean and makes us a new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17). There is no baggage left to hold on to because He already bore it on the cross. Pine Cove exists to be Christ-centered, others-focused, and seriously fun. So as you are driving home after picking up your camper, ask about the spirit stick and activity classes, but make sure to ask what they learned about Jesus too.
- What are two things that make you lose your way?
- What have you been doing to earn salvation or approval from God?
- How can your life look different because of the Truth of John 14?
